00. The Story So Far

Our adventure began when various Planewalkers from different walks of life were tricked by a man named Calaban, led from their previous lives to bondage and slavery. Loaded into a wagon, they were carted off to who knows where, to be sold like cattle.

Or so they thought. Fate had other things in store for these Planeswalkers, and a bandit ambush on a mountain path killed their captors and sent their wagon careening across the path of Helga Slaughter, a Crusader of Kord from the Prime Material Plane, wandering the Outlands.

Freed from bondage, the Planewalkers banded together to seek out Calaban and avenge themselves. Their journeys took them to the Gate-town of Rigus, where they turned the tables on a corrupt bartender and rescued a young slave boy named Toby who would become Helga's squire.

From there, they followed Calaban's path towards another Gate-town, Automata, a place of consummate order and law. But beneath its street they discovered another town, the Underground, where minions of Calaban and some group calling themselves the Society of the Black Lotus had overthrown its rulers (The Council of Anarchy) and ruled the people with an iron fist. The Planewalkers defeated these minions and freed the Underground, earning the friendship of the townsfolk. From there, they continued through a portal to the grand and bewildering City of Doors, Sigil.

Calaban's trail brought them to the door of a thieves' guild calling themselves The Tiger's Claw, and the Planewalkers discovered that Calaban was brokering some deal between them and another guild, The Rise of the Swift, who one Planewalker revealed had been behind the disappearance of his parents. After many adventures in Sigil's Hive Ward, the Planewalkers exposed that dark secret of the Rise of the Swift; they had planned to traffic slaves behind the backs of the Tiger's Claw. Angered, the guild leader allowed the Planewalkers to face Calaban in trial by combat and have their revenge.

But their adventure was far from over. For among the clues and letters they had gathered along their travels, the Planewalkers discovered that their enslavement was just the tip of an iceberg. The Society of the Black Lotus, which Calaban had been serving, had been trafficking in slaves for years, collecting them for use in dark and twisted experiments involving the grafting of monstrous limbs to human hosts. Heeding the call to adventure, the Planewalkers vowed to uproot and destroy this new enemy.

But while battling one man was a task easily accomplished, destroying a vast and powerful organization was another matter. After investigating the Black Lotus and crashing their secret meeting, the PCs discovered that the leader, Guildmaster Brackett, was a wizard of great age and immense power. Though they killed one of his lieutenants in the ensuing battle(Lady Scarlet), their work was far from over.

Although they had only been in Sigil for mere days, word of their exploits had reached high-ranking ears, and the Planewalkers were enlisted by a high-ranking member of The Believers of the Source, one of Sigil's factions. Already known as enemies of the Rise of the Swift, they were sent to another Gate-town, Sylvania, to investigate the disappearance of a high ranking Faction member's daughter believed to be tied to the Swift's slaving operation.

Clues found in Sylvania led to an abandoned silver mine, and from there through tunnels guarded by thieves to an abandoned manor house used as a base by the Rise of the Swift. Battling through minions, the Planewalkers finally toppled the Swift's outpost and took down yet another lieutenant of the Black Lotus.

Interrogating the survivors of the battle, the Planeswalkers learned two things. First, the leader of the Rise of the Swift,Raven Dubois, had left for a secret prison located in the far-flung prison plane of Carceri, The Red Pit. Second, she had gone there to interrogate Cal's father, who was still alive and kept under lock and key.

After a brief interlude slaying a hydra that stalked the forests near Sylvania, the Planewalkers steeled their resolve and prepared to venture into the black and hellish swamps of Carceri. Within that foul and cursed bog was a prison housing a kidnapped father in need of rescue and another minion of the Black Lotus.

And so began the next chapter in the Planewalkers' adventures across the Great Wheel.
