33. Entry Thirty Three: Team Pelor and the Lost Manor of Polyphemus

(July 2019)

Perry Corwyn instructed Team Pelor to go to the Lost Manor of Polyphemus, in Arborea, to collect any items they could find their to support the army in Ysgard in their fight against slavery.

Perry allowed the members of the team to purchase bags of holding (type one), everlasting rations, everful mugs, and a few other small items. He also mentioned that the team should try to bring back a Titan sized magic spear if they came across it (the Bishop was asked by his patron, Zadara the Titan, to find it, and try to hold onto it). They went through the gate, as directed, to the town of Poykeptolos, where a man who had apparently stolen some food was being chased by the town guard. Rannessa grabbed hold of him after he ran into her, and when the man pleaded with them to hide him, Felix made him invisible.

He later explained that he had been part of a team of porters who had been hired by some adventurers to come with them out of town and help them to carry some items. The adventurers had been gone longer than expected. so the man (Trevor) had been chosen by them to come back to town and buy food. Unfortunately, he had been waylaid by worshipers of Dionysus, and woken up with all of his money gone some time later. He agreed to show the lead the team to his party, and let us talk with them about hiring them, although he was reluctant to share many details.

The rest of Trevor's party consisted of two guards, Drangor and Danforth, a female Dwarf and a male Human. and another porter. The Dwarf was angry that Trevor had revealed their position and assignment, but after some discussion reluctantly agreed to hear Team Pelor out. Ranessa explained that the team would look for their fallen comrades, and rescue them if possible, but that if they were dead, we would bring word back, and hire the porters instead. The porters agreed, and told us more details about the previous adventuring team (four Humans; Ranford the fighter, Gregory the cleric, Lissa the mage, and Tylor the rogue)

It took a day of climbing for Team Pelor to finally reach the wall of the manor, which was one hundred feet high, with an open gate flanked by a stone warrior on one side and a pile of rubble on the other. Flick the Dragon flew up to scout, and noticed a human leg sticking out of the rubble. Felix cast Detect Magic and discerned a mix of Enchantment and Abjuration schools, but couldn't quite recall from his studies what that might mean.

Ranessa strode forward to look at the leg and the statue (actually a Stone Golem) animated and made to attack her. After several rounds in which the Team had little success in damaging the Golem, Ranessa summoned her horse, which led the Golem away for long enough for everyone to get through the partially opened gate and out of sight.

The team continued up to the front door; they could see that a path had been cut towards the manor by someone in the recent past. Olwen and Shabani scouted ahead, but could hear nothing, except a faint lapping of water. The party entered, and could see a pool in the atrium. (everything titan sized, of course). They headed to the right. They quickly passed a library full of giant, decaying books, and a storeroom which also looked of no interest. They found one locked door, which Olwen managed to pick (with some difficulty due to its size), after riding with Shabani up to the lock. Inside was a sitting room with a bottle of wine (long since dried up), and two golden goblets which they just barely fit into the bags of holding.

Felix used his Locate Object wand to search for the giant magical spear, and learned that it was ahead of them and below. They continued on, in a straight line, and came to a second large room with a garden, with an oak tree in the middle. Flick, the scholar of the party, said that an oak tree by itself, with no others around, was strange, and flew in to investigate. He noticed that the tree had a face, and he shouted at it to wake up. It was, in fact, a Treant, which introduced himself as Mossbeard. He had come looking for Polyphemus, and finding that he had gone away for a long time, had taken a nap in the garden. He frowned upon Ranessa saying that she was related to Polyphemus, saying that telling fibs or tall tales was a bad idea.

We introduced ourselves to him. He said that he was a “frenemy” of Polyphemus's; he didn't like that Polyphemus occasionally cut down trees, but otherwise he enjoyed his company. He then left to go back to the forest.

The Team continued on, into a kitchen. They spotted a trap door in the corner, and headed towards it. Olwen heard squeaking sounds, and about half way into the room, a swarm of human sized rats ran towards them hungrily. After numerous rounds, the rats were finally dispatched, although Olwen had a nasty looking wound. He cleaned it up as best he could while Flick used acid to take care of the trap door. The Team went down the stairs, and found a wine cellar, with all the wine evaporated or undrinkable, and a further door. Olwen tried his best to unlock it, but it was beyond him. Felix tried using Knock, but it was too big; so, Dimension Doored everyone inside instead.

Inside was a seried of grids with something written in what looked like Celestial on each grid, with a pressure plate in the middle. Olwen cast Comprehend Languages and began to read the nearby tiles - they were the names of famous Titans. On the right wall was another door - more of a stone slab, with a warning written on it in Draconic that stated that attempting to get inside without using the proper steps would be punished.

The team noticed some glowing crystals above. Four Harpies with bows appeared at the top of the room (about 50 feet up), and began shooting arrows at the visible people. The Team fought them while Olwen read the rest of the names on the squares, and then they Dimension Doored out again.

With a little buffing from Olwen and luck from Felix, Ranessa finally recalled what she had read about the Titans, and remember their relative power levels. The team Dimension Doored back in the next day, Invisibly, and after some trial and error, found that they had to trigger the pressure plates in ascending order, from weakest to strongest, in a line from the entrance door to the treasure room door (a path a Titan sized creature could easily walk along).

After doing this, the stone door opened, and the Titan's treasure was revealed: Gold coins the size of dinner plates, a statue of Atlas holding a gem encrusted globe, some gems encased in glass globes, and a Titan sized magic sword, shield, and spear. Everything just fit into the Bags of Holding (other than the statue, which they left behind). However, as the team was leaving the manor, Ranessa's bag began to vibrate. She opened it and the Spear flew out. Shortly thereafter, a Titan approached, holding a Spear. He said that he was Polyphemus, returned from Carceri due to the Spear being released. He demanded that we turn out our pockets and bags. After stalling for a short time, the party Dimension Doored away from him, and escaped with his curses and threats to hunt them down ringing in their ears.

They made their way back to Sigil, and found that Perry was away on some important business.
