Shortly after Martigan first joined the Party, compatriots of his (members of the Church of Pelor and some of the Hobgoblin community) began to be murdered. The killer was writing Martigan's name on the wall in blood, leading Martigan to be a suspect.
Some research found that the most likely culprit was the recruiter who had sold Martigan into the Blood Wars (17), and who Tobers had given to the Baatezu Marrow Gristlegut to be tortured for a week for failing to meet his quotas (Tobers had also given him the cursed dagger which Tobers had unwittingly picked up earlier)(27, 31). He was angry at the party, and particularly at Martigan, and wanted vengeance. As well, his mind had been twisted by mysterious forces.
The party tracked him down and brought him to the Harmonium (Inspector Drept), to clear Martigan's name. Martigan decided to care for a Hobgoblin boy who had been left an orphan as a result of the murders (possibly named Gavin) until he could bring him to the land of the Hobgoblins. (22)
Reinhalt learned from Inspector Drept that the Hobgoblin Killer was still in prison awaiting trial, and that the public prosecutor, belonging to the Fraternity of Order, wanted to do a full investigation on the dagger before proceeding. Drept also mentioned that he noticed a certain Barrister at the pre-trial hearing, a Barrister's named Jian Shang-Di, who has offices in the Lower Ward. (31)
