Lucius and Krug

Lucius and Krug are an inseparable, if unlikely, duo of ne'erdowells from Sigil's Hive Ward. Both orphans, they grew up in the Orphanage wing of the Gatehouse, under the indifferent care of the Bleak Cabal. Lucius, a human boy who lost his mother and father to disease before he could even speak, was fast and clever, but not very strong. Krug, found in an alley as an infant next to the corpses of his parents, was very strong, but not particularly clever or fast. Between the two of them, they had the run of the orphanage, Lucius taking whatever he could and giving Krug a share, and Krug beating up anybody who tried to take it back.

Though Krug never had the brains to learn Common, Lucius managed to pick up enough Orcish to understand what he wanted, and the two of them developed a patois of Common, Orcish, and gestures to be able to communicate with each other reliably enough to function.

After years of terrorizing the Orphanage, the Bleak Cabal was quite happy to toss the pair of them out on their ears once they reached fourteen years old. Knowing only what they'd learned in the Gatehouse, the pair of them continued as they had before. Though the Hive residents included people more powerful and cannier than orphan children, Lucius still used his reflexes and wits to steal what he could for himself and Krug, and Krug continued to pummel whoever tried to take it back. It's arguable whether their relationship can be legitimately classified as “friendship”, but the pair have grown so used to working together that neither can contemplate continuing without the other. Lucius certainly can't beat anybody up in a fair fight, and Krug doesn't have the smarts to survive without help. So they continue to work together.

After an attempted mugging gone sideways, Lucius and Krug ended up becoming Enial's hirelings. Though they never expected it to happen, the relationship has proved to be extremely profitable for both, and their new patron has simply become an extension of their operation.
